(Simi Valley) — Congressional candidate Lee Rogers has announced that his campaign has raised over $100,000 to date to defeat Representative Howard “Buck” McKeon. This represents the recent activity in the report for the period ending December 31 and includes money raised in January. It is more than the total amount raised by challengers in the previous two elections.
Rogers said, “We’re raising money from in the district and around the country. We’ve had a variety of donors including those interested in saving our healthcare system to those concerned with equal rights, but mostly from those who just feel the country is on the wrong track and are tired of being taken for granted by incumbents.
“It’s clear to me and these donors that McKeon is not representing the interests of his constituents. His campaign has been plagued by recent scandals. He’s failed to introduce legislation to stop the Cemex mine in Santa Clarita. He’s voted to end Medicare in the Ryan Budget. After the tragic death of Army Specialist Rudy Acosta, he’s been only semi-responsive to the family only after The Signal reported the delays in the investigation. He’s voted 95% with his party and is heavily influenced by the defense industry which funds his campaign. Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) reported that from 2007-2008, Rep. McKeon voted 25% of the time with the industries regulated by the Armed Services Committee. Since he became chair of the committee, his contributions from the defense industry increased by 444% to $469,000 and in 2011 he voted 100% of the time with those industries.
“McKeon uses that campaign money to pay members of his family for services. His wife acts as his treasurer and in 2007, USA Today reported that she was the highest paid family member of all of Congress. She received $550,000 from his campaign since 2001. He pays other relatives through various corporations for services.
“While I am a successful doctor, educator, and businessman, this is my first time running for office. I’ve hired a great firm to run my campaign who has experience beating incumbents like McKeon and the show of support from my donors is encouraging.”
